La circulación de la moneda se inició en Cuba con la llegada de los españoles en 1492. Piezas de variada procedencia y manufactura fueron utilizadas en la isla durante todo el periodo colonial y las primeras décadas del siglo XX. La primera moneda nacional vio finalmente la luz gracias a la promulgación de la Ley de Defensa Económica el 29 de octubre de 1914. A partir de ese momento las acuñaciones se han sucedido hasta nuestros días siendo un fiel reflejo de los avatares políticos por los que ha transitado el país desde entonces.

The circulation of coins began in Cuba with the arrival of the Spaniards in 1492. Coins of various origins and manufacture were used throughout the colonial period and the first decades of the twentieth century The first national coinage finally became a reality thanks to the enactment of the Law of Economic Defence on October 29th, 1914. Since then, the coins have continued to be minted reflecting the historical vicissitudes through which the country has transited.
